How to Advertise on ChatGPT.

If you’ve heard about ChatGPT Ads and wondered whether it’s something your business should be looking at – the short answer is yes, and probably sooner than you think.

OpenAI switched on its advertising platform in the UK on 6 June 2026. That makes us one of the first countries in Europe where businesses can now advertise directly inside ChatGPT conversations. For Essex businesses that want to stay ahead of how customers find local services, this is worth paying attention to.

We’ve been watching this develop since the US launch in February 2026. We understand how it works, what it costs to test realistically, and whether it’s likely to be a good fit for your business. If it’s not right for you yet, we’ll tell you that too – that’s how we’ve always worked.

What Are ChatGPT Ads?.

ChatGPT Ads let businesses appear in those conversations as a clearly labelled sponsored recommendation, sitting beneath the AI’s answer. You’re not competing for a keyword position. You’re showing up at the exact moment someone is actively looking for what you offer.

Think of it as the next step on from paid search – but instead of catching someone when they type a keyword, you’re meeting them mid-conversation, when they’re already thinking through a decision.

What You Need to Know

  • The UK went live on 6 June 2026 – Essex businesses can access this now
  • Ads appear beneath the AI-generated answer, clearly marked as sponsored
  • They reach users on ChatGPT’s free and lower-cost subscription tiers – the majority of ChatGPT users
  • Targeting is based on the topic and context of the conversation, not keyword bids
  • Conversion tracking is available so you can see what your spend is actually doing

What’s Included In Our ChatGPT Packages

We handle everything involved in getting your business onto ChatGPT Ads – from the initial setup through to monthly management. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Book a ChatGPT Ads call

Initial consultation & fit assessment

We start by working out whether ChatGPT Ads make sense for your specific business, budget and goals. No assumption that it’s right for everyone.

Account setup & access

UK access to ChatGPT Ads currently runs through OpenAI’s team and agency partners. We can assist with the registration and account setup, but this would have to be completed by you.

Context hints strategy

ChatGPT doesn’t use keyword lists like Google. Instead, advertisers describe the types of conversations where they want to appear. We develop your context hints based on how your actual customers research and talk about the services you offer.

Monthly management & reporting

We monitor your campaigns, make adjustments as the platform evolves, and send you a plain-English monthly report. No spreadsheet dumps, no vanity metrics — just what’s happening, what it means, and what we’re doing about it.

Is This Right for Your Essex Business?.

ChatGPT Ads tend to work well for businesses where the customer needs to think before they buy – where they’re comparing options, asking for recommendations, or doing a bit of research before getting in touch.

Good fit:

  • Estate agents and letting agents
  • Mortgage brokers and financial advisers
  • Accountants and bookkeepers
  • Solicitors and legal services
  • Builders, tradespeople and home improvement contractors
  • Care and health services
  • Consultants and business service providers
  • Restaurants, venues and local hospitality

Probably not yet:

If you’re selling something purely impulsive, or your customers buy without much research, the channel is less likely to deliver strong returns at this stage. Some regulated categories, such as:

  • Private healthcare
  • Mental health

Are also currently excluded by OpenAI’s own advertising policy.

Getting Started with ChatGPT Ads.

We saw this with Google Ads in the early 2000s, with Facebook advertising in the 2010s, and with local SEO as it matured. The pattern is consistent: early movers learn the platform, build history, and establish presence before competition drives costs up.

That won’t last. The self-serve Ads Manager is open to UK businesses now, but awareness is still low and competition is minimal. As more businesses discover the channel, costs will rise and the early-mover advantage will narrow.

We’re not saying jump in without thinking about it. We’re saying: have the conversation now, run a sensible test, and know where you stand before the window closes.

Frequently Asked Questions about ChatGPT Ads.

There are alot of questions around ChatGPT ads right now, we answer all of them below for you.

OpenAI launched its advertising pilot in the UK on 6 June 2026 – confirmed by Benji Shomair, OpenAI’s VP of Monetisation. The UK is the first European country to receive ChatGPT ads, following earlier rollouts in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Probably, yes – especially if you’re a service business where customers research before buying. Get in touch and we’ll give you a straight yes or no based on your specific situation.

There’s no fixed minimum spend in the UK at this stage. We’d recommend starting with a realistic test budget – we’ll advise on what makes sense for your business and sector once we’ve had a chat.

Google Ads catches people when they type a keyword. ChatGPT Ads appear mid-conversation, when someone is actively discussing a decision. The intent level is often higher, but the platform is newer and still developing. We’d recommend running both rather than choosing between them.

Users on ChatGPT’s free and Go subscription tiers, which cover the large majority of ChatGPT users in the UK. People on paid tiers (Plus, Pro, Business, etc.) don’t see ads.

No. OpenAI has been clear that ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers. The sponsored placement appears below the response, clearly labelled. The AI’s answer is completely separate.

Yes – conversion tracking is available through the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API, and cost-per-click and cost-per-action bidding are both available for UK campaigns.

Around two weeks from when we start the process. We use that time to develop your targeting strategy and prepare your ad content so you’re ready to go the moment your account is live.

No. We offer flexible arrangements – that’s been our approach since 2012. We want to earn your business month to month, not lock you in.
